I've been selling mullein out of Harlan County farmers market for 11 years and the day my husband got COPD I told him I would NEVER let him take a single fucking gram of what I sell. My stall's the third one from the entrance. Right next to Darla who does the honey. Same spot since 2013, same regulars every Saturday. Most of them come to me for breathing problems. COPD, bronchitis, smoker's lung. They don't trust what their doctor put them on and they want something natural so they drive out to the farmers market and find me. I'd bag it up, tell them how to steep it, they'd come back next week saying they feel slightly better. But my husband Ray had this cough for as long as I can remember. I'd bring it up and he'd wave me off. "It's a smoker's cough. That's what 22 years of Camels does to you." And that was always the end of it. But I'm watching this man get worse every month and he won't hear a word about it. So I started steeping his mullein tea a bit stronger. Giving him the tincture at night too. Figured if he won't see a doctor at least I can give him more of what I know. Every morning I'd listen from the kitchen waiting to hear if it was any different. And every morning it was the same thing. Him over the bathroom sink hacking for 20 minutes and nothing coming up. I'm the mullein lady. This is what I do. And I couldn't do a damn thing for my own husband. I told him I don't care what you want, you're going to a pulmonologist. Doctor did the breathing tests, came back and said it's stage 2 COPD, 64% lung function. Then he said he wants to start him on Trelegy. I asked about side effects because Donna's been coming to my stall for three years and she's on Trelegy. She looked me in the eye one Saturday and said "my lungs feel like they forgot how to work on their own." Said she uses her rescue inhaler more now than before they put her on anything. So I asked the doctor is there anything else. He said that's the standard treatment. I said what about mullein. I sell it, I've worked with it a long time. Could it help him. He gave me that look. You know the one. But then he goes "what form are you giving him?" Tea. Capsules. Tincture. "When you swallow mullein in any of those forms, your stomach acid destroys roughly 93% of it before it reaches the lungs." I said what do you mean 93%. "Why do you think the medicine comes in an inhaler and not a pill? Your lungs need it delivered directly. Anything you swallow gets torn apart on the way down. Herbal or pharmaceutical. Same thing." I think he kept talking after that. I honestly don't know because I wasn't listening anymore. All I could think about was my stall. Eleven years behind that table bagging up mullein for people who are coming to me specifically because they can't breathe. And 93% of it was never getting to their lungs. I called Ruthie that night after Ray went to bed. Ruthie runs an herbal apothecary out near Lexington, been in this her whole life. She's the one who taught me how to source leaf. If I trust anyone with plant medicine it's her. I told her what the doctor said and asked if she'd ever heard of getting mullein to the lungs directly. Something you inhale. She kind of laughed. Not at me. "Honey. I figured that out about two years ago." She said she still sells the leaf and the teas for everything else but for lungs she switched to a mullein inhaler called Revair about two years back. Said it's not a vaporizer or anything weird, it's a real inhaler. The mullein goes straight into your airways, doesn't touch your stomach. Said that's the only thing she'll give someone now if they come to her with a lung problem. She sent one down for Ray. Showed up three days later. I gave it to him that morning. First two weeks, not a whole lot. Maybe a little less tight in his chest. Hard to tell if we were just hoping again. End of week three is when it hit. Ray woke up coughing harder than I'd heard in months. But what he was bringing up was different. Dark. Thick. Almost black. Chunks of stuff that looked like it had been cemented in his lungs for years. He looked at me between coughs and said "what the hell is this." I said I think it's everything that's been stuck in there. I think it's finally coming out. He coughed that up for about 5 days. Each day a little lighter. By the end of the week it was almost clear. Week five, Saturday morning. I'm loading the truck for market and Ray comes outside with the dog and tells me he's gonna do the loop. I almost told him don't. He hasn't done that full loop in over a year. Last time he tried he had to sit on the fence post halfway through til he could breathe enough to come back. But he went. And I just stood there by the truck watching him the whole way. Waiting for him to stop. Waiting for him to grab the fence. He didn't stop. He came back up breathing hard and just kind of laughed. Said "haven't done that in a while." And I had to turn around and start messing with something in the truck bed because I didn't want him to see my face. Two months in we went back to the pulmonologist. He ran the spirometry, looked at the screen, and kind of half laughed. Said his lung function went from 64 to 79% and he's practically reversed the whole thing. Asked what the hell he changed. Ray pointed at me and I told the doctor about the inhaler. He wrote it down and said whatever you two are doing, don't stop. Next Saturday I brought Revair to my stall. Told my regulars what I found out, that for lungs, what I'd been selling them all these years wasn't getting where it needed to go. Some of them were mad. I understand. Tom's stage 3, been dealing with it four years. He didn't say much when I told him. Just bought one and left. About a month later he came by early before I even had everything set up. He just stood there for a second and then said "I woke up Tuesday morning and I just laid there. Waiting for the cough. The choking. It always comes." He said it didn't come. That was the first morning in three years he woke up and just breathed. Marie I honestly thought was gonna yell at me when she came up about three weeks in. She grabbed my arm and said what did you give me, I've been coughing up dark stuff all week. I told her that's the buildup, that's years of it coming out, same thing happened with Ray. Month later she walked up to my stall and said "I stood through a whole shower yesterday. The whole thing. I didn't sit down once." And I didn't even know what to say to her because I knew exactly what that meant for someone like her. If you've got COPD or any kind of lung problem and you've been swallowing mullein thinking it's enough, it's barely getting there. Mullein is amazing. It always has been. Just please make sure you're getting it to your lungs and not your stomach. I'll leave the link below to what I gave Ray. ❤️ https://revair.store/pages/breathing-listicle
