No one warns you how quickly your fitness disappears from the schedule once you have kids. It doesn't happen all at once. At first, I just missed a workout because we'd had a rough night. Then another because work ran late and I needed to get home. Then there was a week where going to the gym would have meant leaving my wife to handle dinner and bedtime by herself again. So I stayed home. All perfectly reasonable decisions. I'd make them again. But somewhere in there, exercise became something I used to do. I'd still talk about getting back into my routine. I had the bag. The shoes. The membership payment coming out every month. I just didn't have the bit where I actually went. Before kids, a workout mostly depended on whether I felt like doing it. After kids, it depended on how everyone had slept, when I finished work, what needed doing at home, and whether there was anything left of me afterward. I kept trying to put my old routine into that new life. I'd plan to go before work. Then we'd be up during the night, and the alarm would go off while I was still trying to recover from the last time I'd been awake. Fine. After work, then. But by the time I'd driven home, I wanted to see the kids. They wanted to tell me things. Dinner needed sorting. Someone needed a bath. Heading back out with my gym bag felt like leaving just as I'd arrived. I'd tell myself I could do something once everyone was asleep. Sometimes that worked. Other nights, I'd sit down for a minute and realize how tired I was. I could hear the dishwasher running. There were toys under the coffee table. My gym bag was still beside the door. The last thing I wanted was to put my shoes back on and drive somewhere. What bothered me was that I still wanted to exercise. I missed having something in the week that was just mine. I missed feeling like I was making an effort to look after myself. And I didn't like how often I was promising myself I'd start again when things settled down. I couldn't even say what settled down was supposed to look like. A week with no late meetings? Everybody sleeping properly? Nothing unexpected happening? I was waiting for a version of family life that never seemed to arrive. One evening, I looked at the time and started working backward. Drive to the gym. Get changed. Work out. Drive home. Shower. I had a little time, but I couldn't fit all of that into it. So I wrote the whole evening off. Then I stayed on the sofa scrolling for a while, which made me feel even worse. There had been time to do something. I just kept measuring every opportunity against my old gym session. Anything shorter felt like it barely counted, so I'd end up doing nothing. That was the part I needed to rethink. I wanted something I could get out at home and use when there was an opening, without turning it into another trip to arrange. I started looking at ways to do some core work in the space I already had. I could fit that around a normal evening. I didn't have to decide in the morning exactly when it would happen, then give up when the day went differently. I liked the idea of being able to start while I actually had time, instead of spending that time getting somewhere. I wasn't looking to build a home gym, either. We already had enough things taking up floor space. Anything I bought needed to be easy to get out and put away, or I knew I'd resent having it there. And I didn't want to spend my one quiet bit of the evening deciding which workout video to follow. That's how I ended up looking at PurePlank. It's a board for doing planks, with padding and handles. There's an app with guided workouts too. I liked how little there was to organize around it. I could set it down, pull up the guidance on my phone, and get started. No drive. No bag to pack. No checking whether I could get there and back before I was needed at home. The padding and handles were nice, but what I appreciated most was being able to use it where I was. Usually that meant the living room. Sometimes it meant moving it into another room because the living room floor had disappeared under toys. I didn't need a dedicated workout space. Just somewhere clear to put it down and enough room to use it. I could start with a short session. If plans changed, the board was still there when another opportunity came up. That made a difference to how I thought about fitting exercise in. I'd spent so long trying to protect a particular hour of the day. With kids, that hour kept moving or disappearing. Having something at home meant I could work with the day I actually had. Some evenings were still a write-off. I don't think any piece of equipment fixes a night when everybody needs something and nobody will sleep. But on the ordinary busy days, getting started involved a lot less negotiation. I could do some core work without making the whole evening about my workout. I liked that I was still home afterward. I hadn't used half the available time traveling, and I wasn't walking back in just as everyone else was winding down. I still enjoy the gym when I can go. I just don't want a missed gym visit to decide whether I do anything at all. That's where PurePlank fits for me. It's something I can keep at home and come back to when there's a bit of room in the day. If another dad asked about it, that's what I'd tell him to think about. Where could it live? Where could he use it? Would getting it out feel manageable on a busy evening? Those were the questions that mattered to me. I kept waiting to get my old schedule back. I love a lot of the things that filled it up. I wouldn't want to empty it just to make it look like it did before. I needed exercise to fit into this life too. P.S. I wouldn't plan around a perfect bedtime. I tried that. Having something I can use at home, when an opportunity actually turns up, makes more sense for me than relying on the same free hour every night.
