Firing a 1719 Pre-Brown Bess Flintlock Musket | The Cache with Pawn Stars Alex Cranmer In this episode of The Cache, Pawn Stars antique firearms expert Alex Cranmer examines and fires an extraordinary 1719 dated British military flintlock. Made before the standardized British Land Pattern Musket was officially adopted, this rare iron mounted arm represents one of the earliest developmental forms of the legendary Brown Bess. Produced under King George I, the musket features a Tower marked lock dated 1719, Crown/GR and British Ordnance proof markings, early iron furniture, a 46-inch barrel, and a deeply formed handrail stock. Its Dutch influenced trigger guard, serpentine side plate, pronounced fore stock swell, and early three-screw banana shaped lock reveal how British military firearms were evolving toward the famous Brown Bess design. This musket survived more than three centuries of use. Heavy powder erosion around the touch hole, wear inside the approximately .76 caliber bore, old working repairs, and carved “JM” initials all provide evidence of its remarkable history. Obsolete British military arms were often sent to North America for colonial militia use, raising the fascinating possibility that this musket may have continued serving in the American colonies. Alex evaluates its construction, markings, condition, history, and $40,000 value before taking this incredibly rare 1719 flintlock to the range. Will one of the earliest ancestors of the Brown Bess still fire after more than 300 years?
