Buff Clucks ad: Molt Goes By Daylight More Than Temperature

It was 70 degrees here in the middle of October. My hens looked half-plucked anyway, and I was stumped. Molt Season Special on the herb supplement right now. I always figured molt came with the cold. First frost, then feathers. That was my whole theory. So a warm October had me confused. I was out on the porch steps in short sleeves. The red maple was turning, and the hens crossed the grass. Feathers everywhere, like somebody had a pillow fight. I checked the thermometer on the porch post. Still warm. Then I looked at the kitchen calendar. I'd been penciling in the sunset times all fall. Square by square, each one a little earlier. That's when it clicked for me. Hens go by the daylight more than the temperature. The days have been getting shorter since June. The thermometer never told me that. The calendar did. My girls were reading the sunset the whole time. I was the one reading the wrong thing. Here's the part I like. I can't move the sunset, but I can change their feed. So every new sack this fall gets a whole bag. Buff Clucks Herb Supplement, mixed right through. I do it on the coop step at dusk. The porch light clicks on, and the sky goes orange. I tear open the new sack and pour the whole bag in. Then I mix it through with one hand. Under that porch light, I can see it all. Yellow calendula petals and green flecks in the crumbles. There are seven herbs in the blend. Calendula, garlic, oregano, basil, rosemary, lavender, and red pepper. They're there to support my hens through the molt. The bag stands on the step next to the mixed sack. I leave the porch light on and head inside for supper. Rough-looking hens on a warm day? Look at the calendar. Then mix a bag into their next sack. The page below has the herb supplement for molt season. Learn More.
