My intention for SPIRALS was to make a purely abstract piece, to force myself into a direct dialogue with the wood I was transforming and with the present condition of my mind and emotional state. I knew I wanted the bottom of the panel to have a self portrait rendered in brown conte, a material I loved in art school and the natural colour of my skin. What ended up grabbing my attention was the grain of the wood. I felt captivated to make marks that highlighted it, and with the palette that spoke to me at the time, it took on a celestial aesthetic. The same spirals that exist in our DNA exist in my Bengali hair, in this Canadian wood, and in the gravitational pull of the galaxies beyond us. Every frame between seconds is so minutely different from one to another, yet time never stops. Motion captured. Time stopped. But always informing. Going in with no plan was challenging, but rewarding in how emotional the final piece came to be. Oil bar, coloured pencil and conte on wood panel, 24x30in. 1 of 1 original in a natural oak frame. No prints will ever be made.
