I'm 71. I have been a big woman my entire adult life. And if you have too, you know the geography of it by heart. The section at the back of the store, past the returns desk, with the fluorescent light that flickers. The mannequins that never once wore our size. The saleswomen with their one adjective, "flattering," which we all know is a polite word for hiding. And the ads. Lord, the ads. Beautiful basics, photographed on women a third my size. I learned the math early. Products photographed on smalls do not work on me. That's not pessimism. That's fifty years of collected data. Then one day, watching yet another ad scroll by, I finally put words on something I'd felt my whole life. Women my size are in plenty of ads, actually. We're the before pictures. Fifty years of advertising, and the only time a body like mine ever appeared on a screen, it was gray, badly lit, standing next to its own future, as a warning. So when this tank started following me around the internet, I did what I always do. I scrolled past it. Three separate times. What stopped me the fourth time wasn't the photo. It was the size chart. It went to 3XL, and it listed cup sizes I actually wear, written like someone at that company had genuinely met a woman built like me. That, and a guarantee that meant the risk was theirs, not mine. So I ordered one. Sand. Skeptical. You know the drill. Here's my report, from a body with a lot to hold. It held. All of it, all day, from the whole top at once, with no wire and no band and no straps carving canals into my shoulders by noon. It didn't ride up over my belly by mid-afternoon, which, if you're built like me, you know is the entire ballgame. It ran smooth from my shoulders to my hips in one line. And I want to say the honest part, because you've been lied to by enough befores and afters. I am still a big woman in this tank. It does not shrink me, and I would not want it to. What it does is organize me. Everything held, everything smooth, everything at its own address. There is a difference between smaller and carried well, and my mirror understands that difference now. Now, about this photo. The brand asked customers to send pictures. I volunteered, which shocked my daughter, because I have spent forty years handing her the camera and stepping out of frame. She asked why. I told her: because somewhere there is a woman my size scrolling past this exact product. Three times, the way I did. Doing the math her whole life taught her to do. And I wanted her to scroll into me instead. So I asked my daughter to take it with me looking straight into the lens. Because I am looking at you, honey. Yes, you. You were never the before picture. You were just shopping in an industry that only ever photographed you as one. Grace & Ease. The tank with the bra built in. The link is below. 👇 P.S. The brand asked what caption I wanted under my photo. I told them: "This is not a before." They said it was too long for a caption. So I found somewhere else to put it. You just read it.
