Stalin's Doctors Put Leeches Behind His Ears To Bring His Blood Pressure Down. It Was 190/110 When They Got To Him, And This Was 1953. The President Who Sat Next To Him At Yalta Had His Blood Pressure Written Down For 10 Years Before It Hit 300 Over 190. I taught American history at the high school for 33 years, and every spring I put the same picture from Yalta up on the overhead projector, Roosevelt and Stalin sitting there side by side. And every year I said the same thing, look at Roosevelt, gray as a sidewalk, he's dead in 2 months. Grown men still yell it at me in the grocery store. I'm 66 and retired, and once a month I do a history talk at our library on a Saturday morning. Yalta is my old faithful. The week all this happened I had my checkup on the Tuesday. My numbers had been creeping up for years, the top one was in the 120s when I retired and its gone up a couple points every year since, and every year my doc said watch the salt. I took the shaker off the table and figured that was that. Never felt a thing, I still split our own firewood. This time it was 146 on top and she put her pen down, which she doesn't usually do. She wants readings at home for 2 weeks before anybody says the word pill, because a lot of people read higher in the office. And walk more and cut the salt and come back. Wednesday I went looking for a better copy of that picture and ended up in a paper out of a medical school in Albania from a few years ago about the health of the big 3 at Yalta. Halfway down there's a little table. FDR's blood pressure, by year. 1935, 136 over 78. 1937, 162 over 98. 1941, 188 over 105. 1944, 226 over 118. 33 years I taught this man and never knew anybody wrote his blood pressure down, every number higher than the one before. Then April 12, 1945, Warm Springs, Georgia. He's sitting for a portrait and he says "I have a terrific headache" and goes down, and his heart doctor takes his pressure and it's 300 over 190. He was gone a few hours later, 63 years old. The next day one of the papers had his doctor saying it "came out of clear sky." I read that out loud to Margie and she said out of a clear sky?? with 10 years of his numbers written down? The paper gets into that. Back then most doctors figured high pressure was the body doing its job, pushing blood through hardened arteries, and the big heart textbook of the time said it might be something that "should not be tampered with." So some of his doctors probably just didn't think those numbers were as bad as they were. Then Stalin, which I knew would be the hit of the talk. In 1953 when his doctors finally got to him after his stroke he was 190 over 110, and to try and bring it down they put leeches behind his ears. Leeches. My dad bought a brand new Buick in 1953. I wrote my Tuesday number in pencil in the margin and it goes right between his first 2. He smoked like a chimney and ran a war from a wheelchair, so I'm not making it into anything, I just sat at the kitchen table with it awhile. Saturday I did the talk. The 5 readings and it got real quiet. Then the leeches and the whole room went EWWW like a bunch of 10th graders. Then questions. Clyde, Margie's sister's husband, sits in the front row every month with his arms folded to "keep me honest," and he says it loud enough for the back row. "Tell em yours, Gil." Margie had told Nadine on the phone. Nadine tells Clyde everything. I said Clyde, this is about Yalta. And he turns around in his chair and says "He's at 146, folks, somebody call the bait shop and see if they got leeches." They laughed. The librarian laughed and tried not to. The rest of the questions were about their own blood pressure, one guy asking about his 152 while I'm up there with a laser pointer going sir, I teach history. Sunday we go to Nadine's for dinner and there's a little baggie of gummy worms by my plate. Clyde never said a word about it, just kept looking at the baggie and then at me, all through the pot roast. Now I'm not a supplement guy, I spent a week every spring on patent medicines and snake oil. So I did what the doc said. Cuff from the drugstore, every reading in the back of my last grade book because it has the little columns, and Margie read me the back of the cottage cheese I'd been eating every day at lunch because I thought it was the healthy thing, way more salt than I'd have guessed. And I started walking with Ernie. Ernie carried the mail here for 30 years, and he was the one guy in that room who didn't laugh. Stacking chairs after, he said he still walks his old route every morning if I wanted company. He still crosses the street at the yellow house on Maple because of a dog that's been dead 6 or 7 years, I asked him why and he said habit. Couple weeks in he mentions he takes black seed oil, his daughter got him on it, take it or don't. I laughed at him. Ernie, I spent a week every year teaching 16 year olds not to fall for exactly this. "Then go find out," he said, which is about what I used to tell the kids every spring. So I did. It's mostly small studies, and put together the top number came down a few points on average, like 3 or 4, and a lot of those studies gave people more of it than you get in 2 softgels. Nobody serious says it fixes anything. I wanted softgels, nothing else in them, and somebody outside the company testing it. Ernie's is Purely Nutrient, their page says it's just the oil, from farms in Ethiopia, third party tested. 2 softgels before bed. That was about 3 months ago. The numbers in the grade book came down some, a few points on top, slow, and it's the walking and the cottage cheese and the softgels and probably Ernie, I couldn't tell you which part did what. One morning Margie got my red pen out and wrote B- at the top of the page. She said it would've been a B but she saw me eat the ham at Nadine's. At my recheck the doc flipped through the grade book, which, a grown man handing his doctor a grade book. She said the home numbers are better, not where she wants them yet, keep walking, keep the salt down, we'll look again in 3 months. If she says pill then it's a pill and I'll take it. And if you're already on something you keep taking it, don't go by a history teacher on Facebook for that. Clyde still puts the gummy worms by my plate. The Yalta talk is back on the calendar for next month. Ernie thinks I should leave the leeches out.... https://purelynutrient.com/pages/cro-33
