I used to think family traditions were something you inherited. Something your grandparents started decades before you were even born. Then I realized somebody has to start them. So we decided to start one for our family. ⭐ Our son is still little. Right now, looking up at the night sky is exciting enough on its own. He points at stars and asks which one is the brightest. Sometimes he asks if we could ever go up there. And one night I had this thought: What if there was one star we could always call ours? Not just for tonight. Not just while he’s little. Something we could show him again when he’s ten. Then when he’s twenty. Maybe one day when he has a family of his own. That idea stayed with me. I’d seen star naming before, but honestly, I never really understood the appeal. I thought it might just be one of those sentimental gifts that sounds better in an ad than it feels in real life. Then I started looking into what you actually receive. A named star. Its coordinates. A certificate we could frame. And a star map that lets us know exactly where to look in the sky. ✨ That changed the whole idea for me. Because suddenly it wasn’t just about giving our son another personalized object. It was about giving our family a place we could keep returning to. So we named one. The first night we showed him, we took the certificate outside with us. He immediately started pointing at the sky trying to find “our star.” He obviously doesn’t understand what it means yet. And somehow, that makes me love it even more. Because one day he will. One day he’ll understand why Mom and Dad chose that star. Why we kept the certificate. Why we looked for the same little point in the sky on summer nights. Why it became part of birthdays, family stories and evenings outside together. 🌌 That’s when I realized what we had actually bought. Not another decoration for his room. Not another toy he’d eventually grow out of. We had created the beginning of a tradition. And that was the part I hadn’t expected. Most things we buy for our kids belong to one stage of their lives. Clothes get too small. Toys disappear into storage. Even the things they once couldn’t sleep without eventually get forgotten. But this can grow with him. The star doesn’t have to mean the same thing to him at five that it means at fifteen. Or at thirty-five. Maybe years from now, we’ll all be sitting outside together again. Only this time, he’ll be the one showing his children where to look. And he’ll tell them the story. “My parents chose that star when I was little.” That thought gets me every time. 🥹 And yes, before we ordered it, I wondered if naming a star was a little cheesy. I get that reaction. I had it too. But I think there’s a difference between something being sentimental and something being meaningless. The sentimental things are often the ones families actually keep. The ones that slowly collect stories until nobody remembers exactly when they became important. A family recipe starts as dinner. A holiday tradition starts as something you tried once. And maybe a family star starts with three people lying under the same sky. Pointing upward and deciding that one small piece of it will always remind them of each other. 💙 That’s what this became for us. One star. One family. And hopefully, one day, another generation looking up at exactly the same sky. ⭐
