I wish I could go back in time and tell myself this sooner… My son’s chewed-up shirt collars weren’t “bad behavior.” They were the first sign he was craving deep pressure to regulate. The chewing, fidgeting, climbing, crashing, constant touching, and meltdowns over tiny things weren’t just quirky kid behavior. His nervous system was overloaded. Hunter is 6 now, but I started noticing this behavior at 3. I used to think he was just fidgety. Or maybe even being defiant. He would put his hands on my face, push our heads together, and lean into me over and over again. And honestly… It got frustrating. I loved him more than anything. But after being touched all day, I felt overstimulated too. I’d catch myself thinking… “Why can’t he just stop?” 😔 But then our OT explained something that changed how I saw everything. She said other people might see it as “bad behavior.” But it was actually a sign his nervous system was overloaded. 👉 “This is sensory seeking.” Sensory-seeking kids need more movement, pressure, and sensory input. Their nervous system craves that extra input to regulate itself. That’s why they seek it out through chewing, climbing, crashing, touching, pushing, and constant movement. It wasn’t random. And when kids don’t get that input in a healthy way… They keep searching for it anywhere they can. Through shirt collars. Through crashing and climbing on furniture. Through touching people. It wasn’t bad behavior. It was an unmet sensory need. Then our OT said something that changed everything. 👉 “Give him the sensory input he’s craving in a healthier way, so he doesn’t have to keep seeking it out himself.” She told us about calming vests. The vest uses deep pressure therapy to regulate the nervous system. The gentle weight and compression gives firm, hugging pressure around the body. This calms the nervous system giving them the input their body is craving. So we decided to try it. Honestly, I hesitated at first. We had already spent money on other things that didn’t really help but….. I figured it was worth a shot Hunter can be picky with his clothes and I didn’t know if he was going to wear it. But on Day 1… I was surprised he didn’t really mind it. It looked like a normal vest, so he couldn't really tell. He kept it on for about 20 minutes the first day. And I noticed he wasn’t bouncing from one thing to the next as much. He could sit still for longer. It wasn’t some miracle overnight change. Just a subtle shift where he seemed calmer. By Day 7, something shifted. He actually started asking for it. But on Day 14, we saw the real changes. He had stopped chewing through his shirt collars. Our mornings felt so much easier. We used the vest for 15 minutes before breakfast. And suddenly getting dressed and getting out the door didn't feel like a battle. And in the evenings, we could actually spend calmer time together. Far fewer huge after-school outbursts and bedtime felt less exhausting for both of us. By Day 30, even his teachers noticed the difference. In school he was sitting longer, listening better, and playing better with other kids. And at home, I wasn’t correcting him every few minutes or bracing for the next meltdown. But the best part was seeing his confidence come back. He wasn’t the “naughty kid” anymore. He finally had a tool that helped him feel in control. So if you’re seeing 3 or more of these signs… ✗ Chewing clothes or sleeves ✗ Constant touching or climbing on people ✗ Crashing into furniture or rough play ✗ Can’t sit still for simple tasks ✗ Meltdowns over tiny things There's a real chance your child is sensory seeking and they may just need the right input to feel settled. I know how helpless it feels when you know something is off, but don’t know how to help. That’s why I’m so passionate about helping other parents recognize sensory-seeking behavior. Comment “NEED THIS” and I’ll send you the exact calming vest we used + how we used it before the hardest parts of the day. They’re the only ones I found that look like normal clothing, so my son actually wore it without a fight. They also do a 100-day money back guarantee, which makes trying it feel much safer.
