I was the happiest man on the planet 4 years ago when my daughter Jenna was born. She was the light of my life. But my world turned upside down 6 months ago. Jenna had always been a healthy kid. Full of joy and love, very active and no known allergies. We have pretty much the same routine for months. My wife Ann and I try our best to buy high-quality food and prepare nutritious meals for the family. We use the same childsafe detergent we always have. No new vaccinations. No serious illnesses in the family, aside from the few common colds. Then out of nowhere it happened. Jenna was only 3 years and 6 months old. It started out as small itchy patches on her wrist and forearm. We didn’t think too much of it. It’d come and go, and we’d apply lotion as needed. But after a heatwave that summer, what we thought was a mild heat rash exploded into her neck and face. Since that day my wife Ann and I battled flaking skin, red angry welts, and fluid filled blisters on her neck. Eventually the flare up became so aggressive it covered the entirety of her little body. We took her to a well-known pediatrician who diagnosed it as a severe case of eczema, and we followed her protocol to a T. That involved getting new cleansers, moisturizers and detergents that were hypoallergenic. And an aggressive dose of 2.5% hydrocortisone to fight the eczema. We were a bit reluctant at first to use steroids on our child, but at the time we felt like there wasn’t an alternative. That’s something we completely regret. We applied once daily for 7 days and then every other day for the next 7 days, as instructed. The redness seemed clear up by day 3-5 (although still dry), but about 2 days after the final application, it always returns, more widespread, and more inflamed. Then I also read about the horror stories of steroid withdrawal. That’s not something I want my little one to go through at such a young age. So, we pivoted, and we had the doctor check the root cause. Patch tests, blood tests, you name it. But everything came back inconclusive. The one thing that always happens is my daughter waking up crying 10+ times a night, itching nonstop. This made me so sleep deprived, having to get up early in the morning for work. But seeing my daughter so tired all day and grumpy from lack of sleep broke my heart. We even took her to a naturopath. That's something Ann and I definitely preferred. As opposed to western medicine that loves prescribing seemingly endless topical steroids. And the naturopathic doctor listened. He didn't repeat those scripted protocols that medical doctors typically say. We were hopeful. The doctor suggested that Jenny has an imbalance of microbiome in her gut. Which is causing inflammation in the body. That's when we started adding natural remedies to her daily routine. This included vitamins, probiotics, and cutting out foods like gluten. We also added foods that are good for the gut, like kimchi and yogurt. Everything made sense and we wanted it to work so badly. We tried it for 2 weeks. Then 1 month. We convinced ourselves that we didn’t do it correctly and tried it for another month. And this whole time we couldn’t let her out of our sign at the risk that she would scratch until she bleeds, or worse get a skin infection. I haven't told anybody this before, but it was one of the hardest times in my life. I searched day and night. I looked through page after page of medical articles and parenting forums. I was trying to find something we hadn't tried yet. My weight spiraled out of control. Seeing her scratch until she bleeds and crying when we have to restrain her to put on socks or pants to stop her from scratching. I started questioning myself. Whether I have done enough as a father to prevent this. I felt so guilty and helpless that my precious daughter had to suffer at such a young age, and possibly even the rest of her life. That night I cried alone in the shower. I was ashamed to let my wife and daughter see me like this. I was supposed to be their rock. They depended on me. Financially and emotionally, that was my duty. But at that moment I felt truly lost. I felt like I’d let them down. Every day I was trying a new remedy, or a new routine I found online. Just throwing stuff at the wall daily and seeing what sticks. Our little angel just wouldn’t stop crying, and when she’s not crying, she’s busy scratching herself raw. I was so desperate that I posted on Facebook asking for help. That same night, Phil, my childhood friend who I haven’t seen in close to a decade, commented. “You haven’t looked into your water have you?” I stared at the comment for a few seconds just processing what he’d said. I called him the next morning to catch up. Paul and I were very close childhood friends. He and I frequently played soccer together as kids, but after graduating, Paul got a job offer out of state and since then we haven’t really kept in touch. Paul spent the last 15 years working as a water treatment plant manager in Mission Veijo, California. And the next words that came out of his mouth left me perplexed. “I wouldn’t let my own children shower in straight tap water. It’s not safe.” I was stunned. What do you mean it’s not safe? Growing up I never gave a second thought about tap water. Heck I drank straight from the tap for decades! Paul explained that water treatment plants actually convert sewage into usable water. Yes, the same water you flush down the toilet. You can imagine how complicated that process is. To turn water filled with cr*p into water that comes out of your faucet. The secret is adding a lot of chemicals to make the water safe. The two biggest ones are chlorine and chloramine. Water treatment plants add enough of it to kill pathogens and turn dirty sewage water into water we can use. They weren't made to be gentle, skin-friendly cleansers for babies, toddlers, and children. Paul explained that the skin barrier is made up of a delicate mixture of natural oils, ceramides, and fatty acids that locks in moisture. Chlorine is a strong oxidizing agent. While it can sanitize water by destroying all of the pathogens, it can also react with the skin barrier. In a very bad way. It strips away the skin's protective layer of natural oils, ceramides, and fatty acids. This creates tiny holes in the skin's main protective barrier. Not only does that cause skin to hold less water, causing skin to dry and crack. Chlorine is also an oxidizer, meaning it releases these free radicals that damage skin cells. The result? Your body registers this as a foreign substance causing injury. The body responds by creating inflammation to try to get rid of it and heal the wound. The redness, the raised bumps, the aggressively itchy eczema… That’s all chlorine. And that’s just what the water treatment plant adds to your tap water. Once that tap water leaves the plant, it goes through a complex plumbing system that is thousands of miles long to deliver water to your home. But here’s what things take a darker turn… The foundation of America’s plumbing system is made from lead, a malleable and durable metal that doesn’t rust or degrade underground. A perfect material for plumbing. Except for one problem. It can leach toxic lead into the water that passes through it. This is very harmful to children's growing bodies. It can cause learning disabilities and slow down brain development. This is a serious problem that causes health crises every so often. The most recent example is the Flint water crisis. That’s when I realized that America’s tap water isn’t safe, even though water treatment is done by the books. I had so many questions… Why did the government approve plumbing infrastructure to be built using lead? Did they not know that lead is harmful to human health? And this is the part Phil became a bit reluctant to share. In his own words: “There are some powerful people who won’t appreciate this getting out.” But I pressed him for it. In the 1920s, people started learning about the dangers of lead. This caused lead mining companies to see their sales drop. These companies joined together to form a group called the Lead Industries Association (LIA). The LIA started a powerful and well-funded campaign to convince people that lead was safe. This campaign lasted for decades and was very successful. They convinced lawmakers to keep allowing lead in plumbing systems. Prioritizing corporate profit over human lives. What’s worse is that this chemical cocktail labelled as “tap water” is considered safe under government guidelines. So nobody questions it. So how are Americans still consuming tap water without serious illnesses? The answer is: stupid luck. Over the years, thousands of gallons of water flow through these pipes. This leaves a thin layer of mineral buildup on the surface. This layer acts like a shield, keeping the water from directly touching the toxic lead. That thin layer of mineral deposit is the only thing protecting us from lead poisoning. The reason why Phil refuses to let his own family use water straight from the faucet. Not without filtering it. Knowing what he knows, shower filters are no longer something that was “nice to have” for his family. And neither for mine. He emphasized three key filtration media: KDF-55, Calcium Sulfite, and Vitamin C. These are the non-negotiables in a shower filter. KDF-55 is the most important, it chemically reacts with lead residue in water, creating a redox reaction. This redox reaction forces the harmful lead residue to bind with the KDF-55, leaving the rest of the water passing through lead free. It’s also very good at neutralizing chlorine in the water, preventing chlorine induced skin damage, irritation and eczema. Calcium sulfite is another important filter media that removes any residual chlorine. Even in hot water (when other filtration media starts to degrade). This ensures the water is safe for sensitive and developing skin. Lastly, there's Vitamin C, which is a powerful antioxidant for skin. But it's remarkable for another reason. It's the only ingredient out of the three that can filter out chloramines. Water treatment plants frequently use this chemical aside from chlorine. At first Phil ordered a filtered showerhead off of Amazon, but after the first use, he knew something was off. After analyzing the samples, he found that the cheap showerheads barely filtered anything. The chlorine, chloramine, lead and heavy metals were at a level he wouldn’t feel comfortable letting his own child shower in. So he looked for other more well known brands. Brands that he’s seen the ads for, and those that influencers recommended. Most of these shower heads contain high-quality KDF-55 and calcium sulfite. But most of them don't contain Vitamin C. This means that those shower heads miss chloramine, even though they can filter out chlorine and heavy metals. Phil almost bought one of those influencer-recommended brands. But then he found Lucinn by accident. Lucinn was the only brand that had everything Phil wanted: KDF-55, calcium sulfite, and Vitamin C. This means all the harsh chemicals and toxic heavy metals in tap water get filtered out before they touch you or your family's skin. Their unique, high-tech filter has 20 stages. This makes sure any leftover contaminants are properly removed. This is what gave Phil the confidence to buy Lucinn. He knew it focused on quality and safety, unlike other influencer-endorsed brands that only use 2 filtration stages. Following Phil’s advice, I went ahead and bought two Lucinn showerheads. One for the main bathroom and the other for the guest bathroom. I’ll be honest, the first few days I haven’t felt much difference and didn’t see any improvement in Jenny’s eczema. And I expected that because bathing in clean, filtered water isn’t the same as taking medication, so it's not going to work as quickly. Filtered showerheads work by removing the contaminants that damage skin, causing it to dry out. Damaged skin causes an inflammatory response. Causing the body to release serous fluid that forms those itchy eczema blisters. Leading skin that itches, bleeds, cracks, and peels off. Damaged skin needs time to heal, and once it does, the body stops being inflamed, and the eczema calms down. But what I would say, though, is right off the bat I felt that the Lucinn is very well built. The water pressure is strong, almost spa like. It was a good first impression for Ann and I. After all, this showerhead was not exactly cheap. We kept using it and continued bathing Jenny in it. By the end of week one, I noticed the faint chlorine smell that we had coming out of our shower completely disappeared. That’s a great sign. In the second week, I wasn’t sure if it was my imagination, but I felt my own skin becoming less dry after showers. I hadn’t checked in with my wife much as we were still busy taking care of the little one. Something strange and a bit of a relief started happening right around Week 3. Jenny’s eczema started to calm down. We hadn’t changed anything in our routine except for filtering our shower water. I checked in with Ann. Her skin also felt more moisturized. She said that she stopped getting the dry and tight feeling after showering. Week 4: For the first time in months Jenny’s eczema completely cleared up from waist up. What’s left are some small patches behind her knees, which we kept under control using the steroid creams. Ann and I couldn’t believe it. The cause of our daughter’s aggressive eczema was hiding in plain sight. And the fix for it was very simple and didn’t involve any more medications that could potentially have bad side effects. Jenny looks a lot healthier and happier. We no longer have to make her wear uncomfortable gloves so that she wouldn't scratch her skin till it bleeds. She’s sleeping through the night without waking up to scratching. And thankfully this nightmare of an eczema flareup didn’t leave her skin with any scars. We’re lucky we found a fix quickly, who knows what would have happened if this kept up. Not only was it unbearable for Jenny, but as parents our hearts ache to see her like this. So if you, your children, or loved one is suffering from dry, itchy, or even inflamed, cracking, or peeling skin, please read this twice. Your home’s tap water is not as safe and clean as you were led to believe. And there is no medication, steroid, or routine that’s going to fix the dry, inflamed skin unless you remove the trigger. You’ll end up in a hamster wheel of using harsh medication to manage the symptoms, only to irritate your skin the next time you shower. If you’ve tried all the hypoallergenic products like CeraVe, Cetaphil. Or even switched over to baby laundry detergent and nothing’s working... That means your bodies weren’t even allergic to these products anyways. Your doctor was probably right to tell you to try that, but if nothing’s changed, it’s safe to rule that out as the cause. If you’ve tried changing your diet, eating more probiotics: supplement, yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut. But your skin’s condition isn't improving, that’s because it’s not a gut issue. The trigger is hidden somewhere in plain sight. Start filtering your water. Lucinn’s filtered shower head is very easy to install. Just remove your old showerhead, and screw on the Lucinn. It only takes 2 minutes, no tools or plumbers required. I regret not filtering my water sooner. If I had known how unclean tap water in America is, I would never have let Jenny bathe in unfiltered water. That might have prevented her from getting that eczema outbreak. But in a way, I am also thankful that I have discovered this danger hidden within our own home. I had no idea that America’s entire plumbing system is made of toxic lead. It's another hidden danger (arguably even more dangerous) that is hidden deep underground below us. Out of sight, and out of mind. I am thankful that Phil recommended this high tech shower filter. My mind is at peace knowing that it's filtering any potential lead or contaminants before it reaches my family and those who I love and cherish the most. So I urge you, if you are still reading this and have not taken action yet, get a Lucinn and start filtering your water. Even if it doesn't seem like your area has particularly dirty water. The risk of getting lead poisoning is too great to ignore. If it's happened in Flint, Michigan in 2015, and DC in 2001, chances are it could happen again.
