My husband opened his Christmas present, said "huh," and disappeared to the kitchen table for forty minutes. He came back with twelve stickers on a water bottle and a list. Some background. Dale retired in June after thirty-one years at the county. The whole time he said the same thing every time we drove past a brown sign. "When I retire, we're doing the national parks." All of them. He'd say it at Thanksgiving. He'd say it in the car. He said it at his own retirement party, into a microphone. By Christmas he'd been retired six months. He had reorganized the garage twice. He had not planned a single trip. I'd tried before. A national parks guidebook in 2019. An annual parks pass in 2022. Both went into the drawer in the hallway with the leaf blower manual and the good scissors. The guidebook still has the receipt in it. This year I bought him the bottle. It's from Let's Wander. A 32 ounce steel bottle with a straw lid, and all 63 national parks engraved around the outside as little outlines. It comes with 63 stickers, one for each park. When you've been to a park, you put the sticker over the outline. When you haven't, the outline stays empty. That's the whole thing. I wasn't sure it was enough. Here's what happened. 9:40 AM. He unwrapped it, turned it around twice, and said "huh." Then he got up, took the sticker sheets and his reading glasses to the kitchen table, and stopped talking to anyone. 10:20 AM. Twelve stickers. He'd called his brother in Ohio to settle whether the 1994 trip was Yellowstone or Grand Teton. It was Grand Teton. Sticker twelve. His brother said "why are you asking me this on Christmas" and Dale said "I'm doing the bottle" like that was a normal sentence. 10:35 AM. He held it up to the window and turned it slowly. He said, mostly to himself, "look at all the empty ones." Fifty-one empty ones. I watched him count them. I've been married to this man for thirty-four years and I'd never once seen him count something he hadn't done yet. 2:00 PM. Christmas dinner. He put the bottle on the table between the gravy and the rolls. Nobody asked him to. Our son-in-law, Marcus, asked what it was. Dale explained it for nine minutes, sticker by sticker, and then went around the table asking everyone which park they'd do first. Marcus looked something up on his phone under the table and did not put the phone away. 9:00 PM. The list. Taped to the fridge, in Dale's handwriting. "UTAH. Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce, Zion. April." With dates. Dale has never written a date on anything that wasn't a bill. He booked it in February. Himself, on the computer, with a card. April 14, 8:50 AM. Arches National Park entrance sign. He got out of the car before I'd turned the engine off. He'd brought the sticker sheets in the door pocket. He peeled off Arches and pressed it onto the bottle right there in the parking lot, thumb flat, edges smoothed. It took him about ten seconds. The woman in the next car over said "okay, where did you get that." Dale told her. She wrote it on the back of her hand with a pen from her glovebox. April 22. Five stickers in eight days. Sticker number fifteen went on at Capitol Reef in the wind, and he had to do it twice. He was fine with that. He had a list. Marcus texted me the morning we got home: "ordered two. one for my dad. don't tell him." It's September now. Dale is at forty-six empty ones. He says it exactly like that, "forty-six empty ones," the way other men say their golf handicap. There's a new list on the fridge. Washington State, three parks, next June. The guidebook from 2019 is finally out of the drawer. I've bought him thirty-four Christmas presents. This is the only one that's ever made him go anywhere. If you've got someone who said it into a microphone at his own retirement party and then reorganized the garage, go to letswander.co. Get the National Parks one.
