My Trainer Told Me To Stop Booking Sessions. She Was Turning Down My Money And I Should Have Listened Sooner. Week seven. I had my card out. She told me not to book another one. I had paid this woman for six sessions and would happily have paid for six more, and she sat at my kitchen table and told me to stop. Here is why that matters. My dog is, by any measure, extremely well trained. Sits, waits, downs at distance, recalls off lead in a park full of other dogs, leaves food on the floor when told. People at the park ask me how I did it. The honest answer is she is clever and I got lucky. And every weekday she took my flat apart. The blind in the back room. A corner of a rug. A pair of trainers. A strip of hall skirting. One interior door and the frame it sits in, which is what finally made me phone somebody. The list of what I had tried before that was long and expensive. Longer walks. A midday walker when I could get one. Two puzzle feeders. The radio. A crate she got out of. A second dog for company for six weeks, which is its own story and made it worse rather than better. In week seven she asked to run the obedience one more time and my dog did all of it perfectly. Then she said the thing that ended our sessions. She asked if she was obedient when I was in the room. Yes. Every time? Yes. She said, "Then she has the training. She is not failing to understand the rule. She cannot reach it." A nervous system in alarm does not run the parts of the brain that hold trained behaviour. It runs the parts that get you out of a building. She said she could teach my dog what to do and she could not teach an alarm that there was no emergency. And she told me not to book any more sessions, which was her talking herself out of my money, and the only reason I believed it. She explained two more things that reorganised the whole picture. The first is that the damage nearly always happens in one burst in the first half hour after you leave, and then the dog sleeps. Which is why the longer walks had done nothing, because the problem was never unspent energy. A tired dog panics lying down. The second is where the damage sits. A bored dog wrecks the middle of the room, where the interesting things are. A panicking dog works the edges. Doors, frames, window ledges, the wall by the handle, at nose and paw height, on the things that open. Every single thing mine had destroyed in two years was on an exit. She was not vandalising my flat. She was trying to leave it. Then she told me what reaches the level underneath, and exactly what to check. Mother dogs release a specific pheromone to their newborn litter. It is the first message a dog's nervous system ever receives. You are safe. Nothing is wrong. You can stop. Receptors stay live for life and almost no adult dog meets it again after weaning. Not a sedative. It does not touch obedience or personality. It lowers where she starts from. Sixty day release rather than thirty, because a thirty day formula is loaded at the front and nearly empty by day four, which is why so many people get a few good days and conclude the whole category is nonsense. And more than one active so it does not fall over when one dips. Days one and two, nothing. Without her warning me I would have written it off on the Wednesday. Day four, I picked up my keys and she did not get off her bed. She had followed me to that door every morning for over a year. Day six, post intact, nothing chewed. I checked the whole flat twice. Week two, one incident. Week three, none, and she stopped the shaking thing in the car which I had filed as a completely separate problem. The door frame is still chewed. That does not grow back. If your dog is perfect while you are standing there and takes the house apart the moment you are not, that is not a contradiction. It is the clearest signal there is. The collar is PawLax and they are giving them away for their two year anniversary. You only cover shipping. See if the free batch is still open She had the training the whole time. She just could not get to it with her body in that state.
