That's my earbud. The monkey and I both knew I wasn't getting it back. This was a cliff temple in Bali, our tenth anniversary trip, about nine in the morning. Our guide had warned us at the entrance: sunglasses in your bag, phones in your pocket, nothing loose in your hands. The monkeys here, he said, are professionals. I want it on the record that my earbud was not loose in my hand out of carelessness. It was loose in my hand because it had already fallen out twice on the temple stairs. Once into a flowerbed. Once onto a stone step, where it bounced with that little clack I'd know anywhere, because I'd heard it in airports, parking lots, and one memorable time, a movie theater. So I'd done what I always did by day three of any trip: taken it out and carried it like a baby bird. Which, to a monkey, is not a precaution. It's a display case. He came off the railing without hurry, took it out of my open palm the way you'd take a business card, and returned to his spot. Three meters away. Close enough to watch. Far enough that we both understood the situation. Then he held it up by the stem and examined it in the morning light, turning it slowly, like a jeweler with a disappointing diamond. A teenager two steps away filmed everything. I am on someone's TikTok, captioned something I've decided never to search. Our guide didn't even flinch. "He'll trade it back," he said. "They always trade. You have fruit?" This is real, by the way. The monkeys at this temple run an actual barter economy. They steal what tourists care about and exchange it for food, and they know exactly what we care about. The guide tossed a rambutan onto the stones. The monkey looked at the fruit. Looked at my earbud. Weighed the deal like a man being lowballed at a flea market. Then he took the fruit, dropped my earbud into the courtyard dust, and left without closing the meeting. I did not pick it up. It had been in a monkey's grip for four minutes and in my life for two years, and honestly, only one of them had ever really held onto it. Here's the part that stuck with me, though. While I stood there deciding the monkey could keep my dignity too, the guide said the smartest thing anyone has ever said about my earbuds. "He took yours because it has a handle." A handle. That's what a stem is. I'd just never heard it said out loud. A little lever hanging off the thing, perfect for fingers, perfect for gravity. And if your ears run small like mine, the tip barely grips anything to begin with — so the handle always wins. That's why it kept sliding out on stairs, on runs, on every trip I'd ever taken. I'd spent two years blaming my ears for a product that ships with a built-in exit. That night, from the hotel wifi, I ordered the pair my sister-in-law had been quietly wearing all trip without incident. ViSound Air. No stem. Nothing dangling for physics, or wildlife, to negotiate with. A small rounded shape that settles into the bowl of the ear — the one part of a small ear that actually has room. Nothing to grab. No ledge to slip from. Once the guide said it out loud, the fix designed itself. It just took a monkey to make me listen. They were waiting at home when we landed. I've had them in daily for two months, and I can report the following: nothing to grab, nothing to swing, nothing to carry through a temple like a baby bird. They go in at breakfast and they're still there at night. Last week I walked through the monkey park at the zoo with my grandkids, wearing them, purely out of spite. Not one resident looked at my ears. Diplomatic immunity. I'll admit the one thing: they're so small and so plain that when they arrived, I briefly worried I'd bought something a monkey wouldn't even respect. I've decided that's the point. The old ones were built to be noticed. These are built to be forgotten. The box comes with a second pair — buy one, get one free — and mine went to my husband, who spent the entire robbery filming it instead of helping. He says it's the best trade he's ever made. He's right, and I resent it. Air is linked below. Take them somewhere with stairs, or wildlife, or both, and see if anything can get a grip on them. You've got 60 days. The monkey can keep the old one. He earned it.
