🔬 Researchers followed 98,000 dogs through anesthesia, and it's changing how owners see a "routine" dental cleaning. For years, owners were told it was simple: drop him off in the morning and he'll be home by dinner. What most of them never hear is what that day actually involves: no food the night before, an IV line in his leg, a breathing tube down his throat and full general anesthesia, all to clean his teeth. In that study, about 1 in 600 dogs died from anesthesia-related causes within 48 hours, and the risk rose to about 1 in 75 in sick or higher-risk dogs. Nearly half of those deaths happened after the procedure was over, during recovery, when the owner thought the hard part was behind them. And a year later, sometimes sooner, the tartar is back on the same teeth, with a new estimate attached.
