I almost sealed swirl marks under a coat of protection and locked them in for a year. Bought a ceramic spray last fall, ready to put it on before winter road salt and slush season started. Before I sprayed anything, I ran a phone flashlight across the hood at an angle in the garage, just to see the surface clean before I put a layer over it. Web of fine swirls, all across the hood and the driver door. Only visible at that low angle, invisible in normal light. If I'd sprayed the protectant straight over that, I'd have sealed every one of those marks under a topcoat. Whatever's on the paint when you protect it is what you're locked into until it wears off. So I stopped and looked into fixing the surface first. Turns out correction and protection are two different jobs and the order matters. Correction levels the clear coat down past the depth of the swirl so the mark is actually gone. Protection is a separate layer that sits on top of clean paint and buys you time before the next round of marring starts. Skip the first step and the second step just makes your swirls glossier. The kit I used is built around microfiber correction pads instead of foam, plus the polish, a finishing foam pad, and towels for wipe-down. $69.95. You need your own dual-action polisher with a 5-inch backing plate, I had mine from putting on a coating the year before. Worked it panel by panel in the driveway on a Saturday with good light, checked with the flashlight at an angle as I went to make sure nothing was left behind. By the finishing pad step the hood was reading clean under the same angle that showed every mark an hour earlier. I want to be clear on what one session does and doesn't do. It leveled out the swirls and the light oxidation on the roof. It's not fixing a scratch deep enough to catch a fingernail, that's through the clear coat and needs actual bodywork, not a polish. Once the correctable stuff was gone, that's when the protectant went on. Clean surface, sealed in, instead of scratched surface, sealed in. I'm not telling you to do this in a specific week or before some deadline. Correction works whenever you've got a free afternoon and decent light to check your work by. I just did mine before winter because I was already about to put protection on and didn't want to lock in a bad surface. If you're planning to seal your paint for the season, check it under raking light first. You'll either confirm it's clean or you'll catch what I almost sealed in. Tap below to see the correction kit before you put anything else on top of your paint. P.S. — order matters more than timing. Fix the surface, then protect it. Protecting first just gives your swirl marks a shinier coat to hide under.
