I never meant to start a lab coat company. 👨‍🔬 I'm a materials scientist. I didn't even know how to sew... But I’ve never had a lab coat I liked. Not a single one in a decade of research across 7 different labs. At best they were “meh”...and at worst they actively interfered with my comfort, dexterity, and productivity. My huge cuffs knocked over a graduated cylinder of HCl. It felt like a straight jacket when I reached for the waste container, yet it was so boxy that it would catch on knobs. The plastic buttons took suspiciously long to undo and my tools would spill out every time I bent over. My lab mates would even come up with ways to mod them to work better. 💸I thought: “We’ve got a million dollars’ worth of equipment in this lab, but my lab mate is taping her lab coat sleeves shut to keep them from dipping into her experiment?” Why the heck am I wearing PPE designed before The Manhattan Project? The answer was almost embarrassingly simple: nobody had ever asked scientists what they actually needed. So I did. 🚗It started on a long solo drive in 2021, the kind of empty-highway stretch where your mind wanders. A deeply-held frustration bubbled up alongside a solution: I couldn't design a great lab coat alone, but maybe with a little help from some (science) friends, I could. It wasn't a business idea. It was more of a dare to myself. When I got home, I threw together The Lab Coat Project Survey, posted it on social media, and promised that if 1,000 people responded, I'd try to prototype something. The responses flooded in. They didn’t just tick boxes. They ranted their hearts out. Many were angry about their lab coats. Some were genuinely sad. Researchers described feeling invisible in PPE that would never fit them. That’s when I knew this was a problem I HAD to solve. The lab coat industry had calcified to the point that suppliers stopped innovating. They stopped asking “how could this be better?” and scientists started accepting it as “the way things are”. There was no longer a feedback loop for improvement. The more rants I read, the more obsessed I got. I sorted every complaint into patterns and crunched the numbers. Fit. Fabric. Cuffs. Pockets. Skin coverage. 📊The data told me what to do: -Safe and comfortable fabric. -Contoured fits for real bodies, not one boxy unisex shape. -Knit cuffs that move with your wrists. -Metal snaps you can rip open quickly. -A belt that actually adjusts to your form. -Full skin coverage from your neck to your knees. ❓But then I thought: “Surely someone has made a lab coat that solves these issues already. I just have to look.” So I did what any stubborn scientist does: I tried to prove myself wrong. I ordered at least 20 lab coats from all over the internet and wore them, compared them, and catalogued every flaw. The results were glaring. Every single one got a feature or two right and then phoned it in everywhere else. Great fabric, but useless belt. Decent pockets, but huge wizard sleeves. Not one was the all-around lab coat I kept picturing. What followed was 18 months of obsessive work: 7 design iterations with a local seamstress, moving pockets two and three times until they landed right where your hand expects them; 6 manufacturing prototypes; 5 samples of different metal snaps; 4 different knit cuff fabrics. I almost gave up after being disappointed in the 4th 100% cotton sample. There was no off-the-shelf twill weave that was “just right” for what I needed to be the ultimate lab coat. So we sourced higher quality US-grown cotton, adjusted the weave thread count, and added mechanical finishing steps until it was the perfect combination of cool-to-the-touch, soft on the skin, yet rugged enough to take a box cutter without tearing. Maybe that was just the Materials Scientist in me nerding out in pursuit of perfection. I shipped 30 prototypes (2 per size per gender) to beta testers in real labs around the world at no cost to them, asking them to abuse the lab coats for a month and report back. I was so nervous I had over-hyped it until their feedback started coming in... "Easily the best lab coat I've ever worn" and “I actually like seeing my reflection now” are not typical phrases used about PPE. Finally, we put it to the test by launching a crowdfunding campaign. Pre-orders poured in and we raised over $30,000 for the first manufacturing run. That original survey became The Louis and The Curie. Two years from that drive to the first delivery, and today over 11,000 scientists across 45 countries wear them including National Labs, R1 Universities, and fast-growing biotech startups. I never planned any of it. I just posted a question and got an answer so passionate I couldn't ignore it. Here’s what scientists and engineers have said so far: 🌟"The first lab coat I actually want to wear” - Alexandros, scientist 🌟"Every pocket is right where your brain expects one” - Kevin, faculty scientist 🌟"Actual protective coverage to my chest, neck and wrists” - Nora, chemistry instructor 🌟"It has everything you want, and some things you didn't know you wanted” - Aidan, researcher 🌟"This lab coat was clearly designed for scientists instead of doctors” - M.L., biology/chemistry student 🌟“Our lab tried out 10 lab coats and yours won” - Heather, Lab Procurement Here's how to try it in your lab: 🎨 Choose your color (white or black) and fit type (Curie or Louis). 📏 Use our Size Finder to get the fit you’ve always dreamed of. 🧵 Add optional embroidery customization for $12. 🚚 Get free shipping on orders over $99 🛡️ When it arrives, you have 30 days to exchange or return it If you’re ordering 10 or more, you’re also eligible for a group discount! 🥼 You can stop settling now.
