The sooner you realize the textbook by itself isn't going to save you, the sooner pharm actually starts to stick. I know that sounds backwards. Every instructor tells you to live in the textbook. That's what I did too. Let me explain. Three weeks before my paramedic midterm I had already read the pharm chapters in our textbook three times. Every med, every dose, every contraindication. I sat with that book EVERY night for a month. And I STILL couldn't keep diltiazem and adenosine straight once a quiz was in front of me. I'd go through it, feel good, and the next morning half of it was GONE. So I'd go back and reread the chapter, which just meant more late nights. My roommate joked I should just teach the class. Then I got a 59 on our pharm quiz. In my program you need an 80 on the midterm. You get one retest, and if you fail that you repeat the WHOLE course. Another semester of tuition, which for me meant another loan on top of the $13,200 I already owe. I'd dropped to part time on the ambulance to make class, so money was tight as it was. And I'd told my parents I'd be done by summer, and now I was picturing my whole cohort graduating without me. The next morning I drove in early to study and couldn't make myself go inside. I sat in my car in the school parking lot with that textbook on my lap, doing loan math in my head, and just cried. Danny knocked on my window. He's in our cohort, and he's repeating the course. He looked at my book and said "I read those exact chapters last year. That's why I'm here TWICE." He said the book wasn't the problem, using ONLY the book was. I told him I'd even rewritten the chapters as color-coded notes, pink for heart meds, green for neuro meds, and it didn't help AT ALL. Every page was still just bullet point after bullet point. "That's the thing," he said. "Notes from the book are still just the book. You need to SEE it." Then he pulled out his deck of flashcards, and it was nothing like my textbook. Visuals and charts instead of walls of text, every med laid out the exact same way so your eyes go straight to the dose, the indications and the contraindications, and the med math drawn out instead of written out. He said he wished he'd had them the first time. I ordered my own sitting right there in the parking lot. I kept the textbook for class, but I studied pharm from the cards, a section a night. Med math was the part that scared me most, and the dopamine clock card made the drip calculation click in like ten minutes after I'd fought with it for weeks. I got an 87 on the midterm. I'm not saying cards took the test for me. I still studied every single night. I just stopped spending those nights rereading and started spending them learning. I graduate with my cohort this summer, and I didn't have to take out a single extra loan. That textbook is still on my bookshelf. I can't make myself sell it back lol, that's a lot of hours. So if you're up at midnight rereading the same drug for the third time, it's not you. It's how you're studying it. - Angie E. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Medic Student, TX These are the ones Danny showed me. They come with PDF guides for med math and peds dosing too, and they have a pass or get your money back guarantee, which is honestly why I didn't think twice: paramedicflash.com/products/paramedic-pharmacology-cards
