My little sister put her prom dress on in the hallway and my mother said the thing I was thinking. The dress came in March, in a plastic garment bag, from a website that took eleven days and cost her two months of weekend money. She opened the bag in the hall by the shoe rack because there was nowhere else to put it and she did not want to take it upstairs, and she got it on over her school shirt because she could not be bothered to go and change. It was a beautiful thing. Deep green, and the entire back was open down to the waist, and the sides were open almost to the hip. My mother was standing in the kitchen doorway with a tea towel and she said, in the flat voice she uses when she is not going to argue, there is no back on that. My sister said she knew. That is where the story starts, on a Tuesday in March, with a seventeen year old standing in a hallway in a green dress she had already decided on and no plan whatsoever for underneath it. Here is what we tried, and I am writing all of it down because I was in that hallway for six weeks and I know exactly what six weeks of this costs. The strapless bra. She had one from a wedding the year before, and it did what strapless bras do, which is that it stayed up for forty minutes and then began a slow descent. We put it on under the dress and she walked to the top of the stairs and back and it was already two centimetres lower than it started. The back was open, so the band was on display across the open back, which is the entire thing the dress was bought for. The tape. She had watched about nine videos and she had bought a roll of the wide body tape, and on the Sunday afternoon we did a full application, which took forty minutes, both of us, in front of the mirror, and it looked all right for about ten minutes and then it started to lift at the edges. Taking it off was the part that ended the tape. She has pale skin and it came off pink and stayed pink for two days, and she said, and I quote, that she was not going to have a body held together with sellotape in front of four hundred people. The other sticky thing. She bought one from a shop in the shopping centre, on the Saturday, in a size that said it would fit, and it stuck to itself in the box more than it stuck to her, and the padding was a single flat slab, so it looked like two coasters had been placed on her chest. She wore it for eleven minutes in her bedroom and we both looked at the mirror and I said no and she agreed. The plan after that was a jacket. She had a denim jacket that she was going to wear over a floor length green dress in a hotel in June. She had worked out that the announcement photographs happen in the first hour and the jacket could come off after that, and she had decided she did not care about the rest of the night. That is the bit that got me. The plan was to not care about the rest of the night. The money went on all of it. The tape was nineteen dollars, the shop sticky thing was twenty six, and the strapless bra had been bought the year before for a wedding and she had worn it once. And a green dress with an open back and a jacket over it is a hundred and eighty dollars to look like you are at a bar mitzvah. I was no use for the first five weeks because I had never solved it either. I did the tape thing at my own prom. I wore a backless top to a festival in 2021 and spent the whole day with my arms folded. The person who solved it was my best friend's older sister, Priya, who is twenty one and who went to two proms and a ball and has a very straightforward manner about these things. She was at ours for twenty minutes on a Sunday to drop off a charger and she saw the dress on the back of the door and laughed and said she had exactly that dress in 2022. She told us the whole logic in about ninety seconds and it was the first time in six weeks that anyone had said something that was not a workaround. She said the problem with every option we had tried was that all of them were trying to hold the dress up from a band that could not be there. Tape is a band you build out of glue. A strapless bra is a band across the one part of the dress that has no fabric. And if you take the band away, the thing has to hang from somewhere else, which means it has to attach at the front and be part of the front. That is what the magic padded sticky bra does. There is no band and there is no strap, so there is nothing to show anywhere on the back, which is the whole reason it works under this dress. The cups are adhesive, so the garment is attached to her rather than hanging off her, and it does not slide down because there is a band sliding down, there is no band at all. There is a clasp at the front between the two cups, and the act of doing it up pulls the cups toward the centre, which is what creates the line, so she gets the definition at the front from the closure and not from padding. And the padding matters, because we had already met a flat slab. The padding in this is curved, so it follows the shape of the chest and the thickness comes around the side rather than sitting square on the front, which means it does not create an edge you can see under fabric. It is thin enough that the dress hangs the way the dress hangs. The limit, and Priya said this too, which is why I trusted her. It is adhesive, so it does what adhesive does. It wants clean, dry skin and no moisturiser and no oil, and if the room is hot and the night is long, that is the clock it is on. It is not for everyone, and the box says as much, and it says it plainly: not recommended for sensitive or thin skin. My sister does not have sensitive skin and she tested it for a week before the prom, twice, once for a full evening, which is the only sensible thing either of us did in six weeks. She bought it for thirty two dollars, which is less than the tape and the coasters added together. Then the details, which nobody tells you and which took two more conversations. It is hand clean only, warm water and mild soap, no machine and no dryer. It has to air dry, and where it dries matters because dust sticks to adhesive, so it goes face up somewhere clean. The protective films have to go back on and the whole thing goes back in the box, away from direct sunlight, and there is a reason for that because the sun will cook the adhesive. It is reusable and washable up to twenty times, which for a prom is irrelevant and for the two weddings she has since been to is not. The eighth of June. She got ready at her friend's house and I did the clasp through the doorway with my eyes shut, which is a thing sisters do. I have seen the photographs. There is one on the stairs at the hotel, taken about six, where she is standing sideways with her hand on the bannister and the whole back of the dress is open and empty and there is nothing on it, and she is standing up straight in a way she was not standing in the hallway in March. And the thing that made me write this. She took the jacket off at half past seven and it stayed in the cloakroom all night. She danced. She came home at one in the morning and the first thing she said, before she said anything about the night, was that it did not move. Two honest things, from the sister who watched all of it. One, the first attempt is a disaster and you should plan for it. It is not like a bra, where you put it on and it is on. There is a technique to getting the cup on without it folding onto itself, and it takes two or three goes to find where each cup wants to sit on you. She did it four times in her bedroom before the night and the fourth was the good one. If the first one goes wrong, take it off, wash it, let it dry, try again on another day. Do not decide it is broken at nine at night. Two, if your dress is tight across the sides, the volume has to go somewhere. She went up one cup size in what she chose and it changed the fit of the dress under the arm, and we only found that out because she tried it with the dress on and not in a bedroom in a t-shirt. Do the whole dress, every time. She is nineteen now and she has worn it to two weddings, and it lives in its box in her wardrobe with the films on, and she is careful with it in a way she is not careful with anything else she owns. The dress is on a hanger in the spare room with the jacket still on the back of it. Nobody has taken the jacket off the hanger. Priya found the size chart on @boombaofficial, which is how we knew to go up, and boomba is where the second one came from in the May when she decided the first was too small. It arrived in four days. The prom was on the eighth of June and the hallway conversation was on a Tuesday in March and those eleven weeks were the worst eleven weeks of her year.
