If you hunt and own more than two pairs of ear pro, you'll get this. Booze? Nope. Gambling? Nope. Buying another set of ear pro because some guy at deer camp swears "these are the ones"? Yeah... that's my problem π My wife made me lay it all out on the tailgate last weekend so I could "see what I've done." So here it is. My honest take on everything I've owned, so y'all can skip the part where you waste the money. Range days, tree stands, duck blinds, 20 degree mornings, 85 degree September dove shoots. I've worn all of these in all of it. Here's where I landed. Orange foam plugs: 6/10 Look. For a couple bucks, they work. Every range bag I own has a handful in the bottom. But in the woods? You're deaf. Totally. Can't hear the leaves, can't hear your buddy whisper, can't hear the deer until he's already looking at you. And every guy does the same thing. Pulls one out "just for a sec" to listen. Then the buck walks out. Then you're shooting with one plug in your pocket. Ask me how I know π Keep them as backup. Always. Walker's Razor: 6/10 Probably gonna make somebody mad here. They're fine. Cheap, slim, easy to find. Half the guys at my range started on them. My problem is the woods. When I hear something crunch behind me, I want to know WHERE behind me. These never gave me that. And they're still muffs. Cup hits the stock when I get my cheek down. Every. Time. Good starter pair. Wouldn't buy them again for hunting. Howard Leight Impact Sport: 7/10 Honestly pretty dang good for the money. Sound is cleaner than the Walker's to my ears. But wear them for six hours on an early season sit and tell me how much you love them π Sweat city. And in November they don't play nice with a beanie. Either the hat comes off or the seal does. Solid budget muffs. Just not something I want to live in all day anymore. The $400 Swedish muffs: 8.5/10 I'll give them their flowers. These are GOOD. Great sound. You can actually tell where things are. Comfortable. Built like a tank. But buddy... open your wallet π And at the end of the day, they're still two big cups on your head. Still in the way of the stock. Still hot. If you've got the money and love muffs, buy once, cry once. I get it. I just wanted something smaller. The "tactical" earbuds everybody's running ads for: 5/10 These are the ones that hurt. About $200. Looked great on paper. Came with tips that never sealed in my ears right. I was pushing the left one back in every 20 minutes. In the stand. With gloves on. When one's loose, the shot comes right around it, so what's the point. They're in a drawer now. My wife reminds me about the $200 every time she opens it. Wovaire Sentry: 9/10 These were the surprise. My brother in law brought a pair to camp and I figured they'd be more of the same. Little black buds, how different can they be. Different. The difference is the fit. They come with memory foam tips you roll down and slide in, and they swell up and fill your ear. Plus a triple flange set if foam's not your thing. Then you cup your hands over your ears. If the sound barely changes, you're sealed. Ten seconds. First time any earbud has passed that test in my ears. Then the stuff that matters in the woods: β’ Hears the quiet stuff, footsteps, leaves, a whisper in the blind β’ Anything over 82 dB gets shut down in half a millisecond β’ 26 dB of noise reduction β’ About 8 hours a charge, 40 with the case, so a whole week at camp β’ IP67, rain and snow don't matter β’ Bluetooth if you want a podcast on the drive in β’ One button. No app. But here's what sold me: NO. MORE. MUFFS. Nothing on my head. Nothing sweating. Nothing hitting the stock. They fit under my beanie and I forget they're in. First sit with them I heard a doe coming through the creek bottom before I saw her. When my buddy shot from the next stand over it was a pop. That's it. They're not $20 budget muffs. They're not $400 muffs either. Less than what I paid for the ones in the drawer. And they give you 30 days to try them. Even if you've used them. That's what got me, after the drawer. Would I throw out my foam plugs? Nope. Would I tell a guy with $400 muffs he's wasting his money? Course not π They're great. But if somebody asked me today what to buy for hunting without spending stupid money? Sentry. Easy answer. They're doing Buy 2, Get 1 Free for deer season right now, which is how my brother in law, his son and I all ended up with a pair. Anyway. There's my yearly excuse for owning way too much ear pro π They're below. There are a bunch of similar looking buds out there, so make sure you get the ones with the foam tips. π
